I am starting my internship in Addictions Counseling very soon and I was looking for a step by step guide to show me how to do MI and this book is definitely a great start! I was hesitant at first because the book is so short, however it gave me the tools to be able to start motivational Interviewing. MI is definitely going to be a skill that I will learn over time, but the OARS acronym is a great reminder, along with the step by step instructions in this book. I have the Motivational Interviewing book by Stephen Rollnick, but I bought the first edition by mistake, and it is somewhat hard to read. This book gave me specific ideas and techniques to start using right away. I'm pleased with this book The book is short but very helpful and informative. I took a formal training in MI, but before I did, I read this book. It allowed me to better understand and be prepared for the training. I also reviewed the book afterwards for a more thorough understanding.The book by itself though is an excellent resource. If you're looking for an abbreviated version to get your toes wet in motivational interviewing,this is the book to read.
